Inaugural event provided resources from local, state, federal level

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Nov. 4, 2023) – Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson on Saturday hosted Gwinnett’s inaugural Stand Down event for veterans, active service members and their families.   

The free event featured critical resources from local, state and federal partners — including COVID-19 testing and flu shots provided by the Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale Public Health Departments; mental health screenings and workshops provided by licensed clinicians from View Point Health; childcare activities offered by Gwinnett’s Building Brains Anywhere program; groceries from mobile market Goodr; an opportunity to apply for County jobs and build resumes; PACT Act and other federal services from Congresswoman Lucy McBath’s Office and the Office of Veteran Affairs; and meals were provided by the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

“As the daughter of a veteran, it was important for me to recognize the bravery our veterans showed to help shape our great nation – specifically our unhoused veterans who fought for our country but need help here locally,” said Hendrickson. “It was an honor to celebrate their dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment.”

"These men and women sacrificed so much to serve us during their time in our armed forces, and we have a responsibility to ensure that they are taken care of when they transition out of the military. I want to thank Chairwoman Hendrickson, Commissioner Watkins, Sheriff Taylor, and all our Gwinnett County leaders for putting together such an important resource for our veterans."

Col and District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins. “Together, we are a tapestry of sacrifice, courage and honor. As veterans, we carry the torch of freedom, and in our unity, we find strength. I salute my fellow veterans, past and present, for your unwavering dedication to our great nation."

“We honor the veterans who have answered the call of duty not once, but twice” said Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor.” They have selflessly served our country on the front lines, protecting our freedom, and ensuring our safety. And now, they continue to serve the citizens of Gwinnett County.”

Nearly 200 veterans, families and active service members attended the first-time event.
