Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson honored the courageous and trailblazing women veterans of Gwinnett County in a special event held to observe Women Veterans Recognition Day, celebrated June 12 annually. On that date 75 years ago, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to permanently serve as regular members of the military.

The first annual event, which took place June 5 at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville, celebrated women veterans’ remarkable achievements and invaluable contributions to our nation's armed forces. The occasion served as an opportunity for elected officials and others to express gratitude to and honor the women who selflessly served our country, demonstrating resilience and courage in defending our nation’s freedoms.

Hendrickson, a passionate advocate for women's rights and veterans' causes, spearheaded this initiative to shed light on the often-overlooked stories and experiences of women veterans. She believes their voices and contributions deserve greater recognition and appreciation within the community.

“The empowerment of women veterans and those serving on active duty is an investment in our community’s future. Our investment in these programs and services is our way of saying thank you those women who stand in the face of adversity and excel in male-dominated spaces,” Hendrickson said.

Retired Lt. Col and District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III challenged the women gathered to continue to serve in civilian life as they served in the military.

"The women veterans in our community demonstrate tremendous strength, fortitude, and bravery throughout their service,’ Watkins said. “It is essential that we come together as a community to acknowledge their unique contributions and ensure their stories are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.”

The event featured a series of remarks from notable veterans, including a keynote speech by Georgia Department of Veteran Services Director Veda Brooks. It followed a proclamation signed by Hendrickson in April recognizing Women Veterans Recognition Day.
