Homicide – Amir Vega (age 10 months)

(Norcross, Georgia)  The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide Unit has made an arrest in the death of a 10 month old baby boy. The mother’s boyfriend, Jahlin Corey (age 27, Norcross), has been charged with two counts of Felony Murder, one count of Aggravated Assault, and one count of Aggravated Battery.  The child’s mother, Dennisa Vega-Rivera (age 27, Norcross), has been charged with one count of Cruelty to Children 2nd Degree.

The incident began on Monday, September 2.  At around 4:40 AM, a medical call was initiated to 1405 Beaver Ruin Road Apt #1407 in reference to a baby with breathing problems.  The baby was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the child died.  Injuries were observed on the baby’s body.  Hospital staff notified GCPD of the death because the child and his family lived in Gwinnett County.  The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the body.  Officers secured a search warrant for the home.

The autopsy results revealed severe injuries including, but not limited to: fractured skull, fractured ribs, and intestinal bleeding.

Jahlin Corey and Dennisa Vega-Rivera were eventually confronted about the autopsy results.  Their explanations were inconsistent with the findings, and they were both arrested.  They are currently incarcerated at the Gwinnett County Jail with no bonds.
