Owner Surrender
Unfortunately, there are times when pet owners find themselves unable or unwilling to care for their pet. Pet owners are encouraged to attempt to rehome their pet through family, friends, or rescue organizations before bringing it to the center.
Pets surrendered to the center by their Gwinnett County owner are immediately available for adoption after they are spayed/neutered.
Owner surrender pets must meet the following criteria:
-
Pet must be current on vaccinations administered at least two weeks before surrender (must provide paperwork from a licensed veterinarian).
-
Pet cannot have any health issues.
-
Pet must pass a temperament evaluation by an animal control officer.
-
The owner must be a Gwinnett County resident and show proof of ownership and residency.
- The owner must pay the $25 owner-surrender fee per animal.
-
At peak seasons, the shelter may not accept surrendered pets due to lack of space.
If the above criteria are met and space is available, proceed to the following steps:
- Complete the Owner Surrender Appointment Request Form and upload a required photo of your animal.
- After you submit your pet's surrender request, you will receive an email within three business days that will inform you if your request has been accepted or denied.
- If your request is approved, the next steps will be communicated in the email.
- You will need to schedule an appointment for a temperament assessment of your pet.
- If your pet fails the evaluation, we won't be able to accept the surrender of your pet.
- Animals may be refused or euthanized if they are injured, diseased/infectious, aggressive, and, as a last resort, to prevent overcrowding in accordance with Gwinnett County’s Animal Welfare Ordinance Section 10-36.
- This is a serious decision based on staff experience, training, and knowledge, and often in consultation with other resources.
- We strive to provide a safe and healthy environment for all animals and attempt to find appropriate adoptive homes or rescue groups for all animals in our care.
