GWINNETT COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ROUNDUP

(Lawrenceville, Ga., March 20, 2025) – The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners acted on several initiatives during its March 18 meeting. A recap of what the Board approved follows.

Ivy Creek Greenway boardwalk renovations

The Board awarded Steele & Associates, Inc. a contract not to exceed $1.3 million to renovate the Ivy Creek Greenway boardwalk. Originally built in 2008, the boardwalk connects the Mall of Georgia to The Preserve at Mill Creek Apartments and the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center.

Regular inspections in 2023 identified significant wear, leading to a structural engineering review that recommended a replacement plan within five years to prevent critical deterioration. Renovations include replacing wooden decking, railings and structural components with a prefabricated aluminum system from GatorBridge, extending the boardwalk’s lifespan.

To minimize environmental impact, construction will be completed top-down, reducing disruption to the surrounding landscape. Work is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025, following material delivery.

The project is funded by the 2023 SPLOST program.

Jimmy Carter Boulevard Master Plan

The Board approved a $440,000 contract with TSW to develop a master plan for Jimmy Carter Boulevard, a key corridor in Gwinnett County. This project is part of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Livable Centers Initiative with $320,000 in grant funding and a $120,000 local match.

The master plan will guide land use, transportation, housing, economic development and architectural design through a community-driven planning process, ensuring a strategic vision for this important gateway.

New monument signs for government buildings

The Board awarded a $224,000 contract to A-1 Signs, Inc. for the installation of new monument signs at several County facilities. The project includes updated signage for:

• One Justice Square to be renamed Innovation Square.

• Government Annex to be renamed Connections Corner.

• Courts Annex to be renamed Gwinnett Traffic Court and Juvenile Justice Building.

These rebranded building names aim to enhance public navigation and reflect the County’s evolving services.

Gwinnett Place Transit Center architectural and engineering design

The Board approved a $3.5 million contract with Wendel Architecture, PC to provide architectural and engineering design services for the new Gwinnett Place Transit Center.

Funded 80% by the Federal Transit Administration, this project will create a modern transit hub at the Gwinnett Place Mall site. A multi-department review committee evaluated proposals based on quality management, technical expertise, transit knowledge and experience, with Wendel Architecture scoring the highest.

The contract includes facility design, environmental documentation and engineering support during construction, ensuring a seamless transition into the next phase of development.
