Gwinnett awarded federal grant to address roadway safety issues
Posted: February 21, 2023
Gwinnett County has been awarded $200,000 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program. These funds will help to improve and build upon existing roadway safety projects.
The County will contribute a match of $50,000 for a total of $250,000 to create the Countywide Safety Action Plan, which will implement measures that prevent roadway deaths and injuries. This plan will aim at reducing motorist, bicyclist, and pedestrian fatalities on county-maintained roads and state routes.
The Gwinnett Department of Transportation has identified safety improvement projects through various ongoing planning efforts, including the Comprehensive Transportation Plan, the Safe and Equitable Access Study, and the recent voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program. The Countywide Safety Action Plan will prioritize those safety improvement projects and build a roadmap that addresses safety issues across the county.
The Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocating $800 million in investments over the next five years. The SS4A program funds regional, local, and Tribal initiatives and supports the U.S. Department of Transportation’s goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our nation’s roadways.
