Gwinnett Comprehensive Transportation Plan
Vision and Goals
The vision of the Comprehensive Transportation Plan is to create a well-connected, equitable, and safe mobility network. The plan aims to:
- Enhance safety for everyone
- Promote resilience by considering environmental impacts and ensuring infrastructure readiness for extreme weather
- Encourage innovation by embracing new transportation technologies and practices
- Preserve community livability by respecting existing open spaces and promoting sustainable transportation options
- Improve connectivity to economic and employment centers, public amenities, and neighboring communities
- Support economic vitality by improving freight movement and supporting redevelopment opportunities
Phases
The CTP was developed through a comprehensive process involving extensive community engagement and technical analysis over three primary phases:
Community Visioning and Goal Setting (Summer 2022):
- Engaged the community to establish the plan’s vision, goals, and priorities
- Conducted public meetings and surveys to gather initial input and ensure community needs and aspirations are reflected
Needs Assessment and Strategy Development (Fall 2022 to Spring 2023):
- Analyzed current conditions, identified gaps, and assessed future needs
- Developed strategies and early recommendations to address identified needs, involving further community input to refine these strategies
Draft Plan and Community Feedback (Summer 2023 to Fall 2023):
- Presented draft recommendations to the community and gathered feedback
- Prioritized projects based on community input and technical feasibility
- Finalized the plan with detailed recommendations for short-, mid-, and long-term projects
Community Involvement
Community engagement was key during the development of the CTP. The process included public meetings, interactive events, and online surveys to gather input from residents. Key takeaways include:
- Safety and comfort: A preference for safe, comfortable, and convenient transportation options
- Multimodal transportation: Strong support for integrating various transportation modes, including public transit, biking, and walking
- Connectivity: Emphasis on improving connections within the county and to regional job centers
- Land use: Recognizing the impact of land use on transportation success
Recommendations
The CTP includes a variety of recommendations to improve Gwinnett's transportation network:
- Short-term projects (2024 to 2030): Immediate needs and projects already in development, including road capacity enhancements, intersection improvements, and pedestrian facilities
- Mid-term projects (2031 to 2040): Ongoing needs with a focus on enhancing multimodal transportation options and safety
- Long-term projects (2041 to 2050): Anticipation of long-term transportation demands based on future growth
- Aspirational projects (2050+): Necessary projects that are not yet funded but are critical for long-term success
Policy Goals
The CTP also guides several policy areas to support the transportation network:
- Equity: Ensuring transportation improvements benefit all communities, including underserved areas
- Technology: Expanding the use of connected vehicle technologies and intelligent transportation systems
- Resilience: Enhancing infrastructure to resist extreme weather and other disruptions
- Electric vehicle readiness: Promoting the adoption of electric vehicles through infrastructure and policy support
- Economic development: Supporting economic growth through improved transportation access and efficiency
