(Wednesday, June 16^th, 2010 @ approximately 1:30 PM) Officers of the Gwinnett County Police Department responded to a report of a robbery occurring at a residence in the 3500 block of Spring Mesa Drive.  This is an address in unincorporated Gwinnett County that is associated with Snellville. 

Preliminary investigation has found that 5 suspects, 4 men and 1 woman went to the residence on Spring Mesa Drive where they engaged in an apparent attempt to rob the residents therein.  During the course of this, a resident of the household was able to call 911.  As officers responded to this robbery report, the suspects fled the residence.  As the suspects were fleeing, before police were able to arrive on scene, several gunshots were fired at the suspect's vehicle.  The driver and front seat passenger were both struck.  The driver was struck in the hip, sustaining serious injury, while the front seat passenger was struck in the head, suffering critical injuries.  As the suspects' vehicle took flight from the subdivision, it was spotted on Springdale Road by a responding Gwinnett County Police Officer who was approaching from the opposite direction.  As the officer turned, the suspects' vehicle left the roadway and entered a roadside ditch and a stand of trees.  When the vehicle came to a stop, one occupant fled from within the vehicle.  The officer discovered 4 other suspects within the vehicle; the 2 injured occupied the front seat, 2 others, whom were not injured, occupied the rear seat.  Medical assistance was immediately summonsed for the injured.  The 2 uninjured suspects were immediately detained.

Officers responding to the affected residence found that none of the persons present had been seriously injured.  Detectives have since learned that the robbery attempt was likely motivated by the sales of illegal drugs.  Preliminary investigation at the residence found indications that gunfire was exchanged between the persons in the residence and the suspects as they were attempting to flee.

Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses.  Criminal charges are expected to be filed.  None of those injured or detained are being identified at this time.  This remains an active investigation.

UPDATE 1:  Thursday, June 17^th, 2010

Gwinnett County Police Detectives have criminally charged 5 persons in connection with their respective roles in this incident. 

Those charged in connection with the robbery aspect of this investigation are:  35 year-old Walter Simon of Detroit, Michigan - Simon has been charged with 1 count of Armed Robbery and 1 count of conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery; 35 year-old Kara Casey of Detroit, Michigan - Casey has been charged with 1 count of Armed Robbery and 3 counts of False Imprisonment; 24 year-old Anthony Trim of Lawrenceville - Trim has been charged with 1 count of Armed Robbery and 3 counts of False imprisonment.  20 year-old Cortez McClain has also been identified as having been in the company of these suspects and is currently being sought for questioning.  Those injured are identified as Walter Simon who received a gunshot wound to his left hip and 17 year-old Devonte Bowles of Lawrenceville who remains in critical condition after suffering gunshot wounds to his head. Both Simon and Bowles were seated within the vehicle and leaving the scene of this incident when they were shot. 

Those charged in connection with the shooting aspect and the affiliated drug possession aspect of this investigation are:  21 year-old Erick Moncrieffe of Snellville - Moncrieffe is charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Assault and 1 count of Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute; 19 year-old Travys Davy of Decatur - Davy is charged with 1 count of Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute and 1 count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. 

UPDATE 2:  Wednesday June 23^rd, 2010

Detectives have learned that Devonte Bowles has died from the injuries he suffered during the incident. One Aggravated Assault charge against Moncrieffe has now been upgraded to Felony Murder.
