Adoptions and intakes paused
The Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center is pausing adoptions and intakes for dogs and puppies through Thursday, January 2 to prevent the spread of Streptococcus Zooepidemicus, known as Strep Zoo.
Symptoms in dogs are severe respiratory distress, nasal discharge, vomiting and rapid decline in health within 24 to 48 hours. Without timely intervention, it can be fatal. Treatment with antibiotics is effective since it is a bacterial infection. Early diagnosis is key.
Pet owners should monitor pets carefully for symptoms and seek immediate veterinary attention if symptoms arise. Strep Zoo is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can transfer between animals and humans, although human cases are very rare and associated with other underlying diseases or immunosuppression.
During this time, Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement will continue to process pet reclaims. The center will also continue to intake sick, injured, or aggressive animals for the safety of the community.
Adopters and Fosters
Before committing to lifelong care of a pet, potential adopters are encouraged to consider the type of pet that best suits their family. Responsible pet owners provide appropriate food, water, shelter, and medical care as well as companionship, exercise, and a happy living environment.
Pet owners should also read and follow the Gwinnett County Animal Ordinances.
There are no holds for any animal at any time. Residents must be at least 18 years old to adopt. Remember to bring a leash and collar or a cat carrier.

Shelter Pets
Animals posted on the website represent those that are stray, found, and animals that may be available for adoption. To give owners time to reunite with their pets, animals are rarely available for adoption when they first arrive.
Photos of injured animals are not posted on the website due to their graphic nature. If you have lost a pet and do not see it among the shelter pets, call 770.339.3200 and provide a description of the pet and the location where the pet was last seen. Our Customer Service Representatives can provide information for pets at the shelter matching your description.
