PHASE I
1. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION
To be considered for employment with the Gwinnett County Department of Fire
and Emergency Services, you must complete and submit an application and a
Gwinnett County Protective Services Background Questionnaire to the Gwinnett
County Department of Human Resources. The application must contain truthful
and complete responses. Copies of all applicable certifications must be turned
in with application. Candidates who meet the requirements for applying will
continue with the steps in the hiring process. Candidates who do not meet
the requirements for applying will be notified with an explanation regarding
why they were unable to continue in the hiring process.
2. PRELIMINARY ORIENTATION
A Preliminary Orientation will be held for applicants to fill out their Background
Booklet and to obtain information on the Physical Performance Evaluation
(PPE). This appointment generally takes approximately four (4) hours to complete.
The background booklet must contain truthful and complete responses. Any
inaccurate, untruthful, or misleading statement(s) made in the background
booklet (or at any point in the hiring process) will be cause for disqualification
from the selection process.
3. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
A comprehensive background is conducted on each applicant to establish evidence
of good moral character, a well-adjusted personality, community commitment,
fire service acceptability, and a pattern of conduct acceptable to the Gwinnett
County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. The background investigation
remains ongoing throughout the entire hiring process.
4. REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
You will be given a specific date to submit the following documentation to
the Department:
† Certified copy of birth certificate
† Official transcripts from high school/college in sealed envelope
† Copy of high school diploma or GED
† Copy of driver's license
† Copy of social security card
† Copy of any certifications Fire or EMS related
† Individuals with military service must provide a DD214 for each term of
service
† Copies of any documentation relating to the following: adoption records,
marriage certificates, bankruptcy discharge, divorce decree, etc.
Failure to provide all requested documents will result in your removal from the process. Please note these items will not be returned to you, regardless of your outcome in the hiring process.
5. PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Applicants will be scheduled for a Physical Performance Evaluation (PPE). This
test determines if the applicant is physically able to perform the essential
job duties of a Firemedic. Each applicant must successfully complete

6. ORAL INTERVIEW
The interview is designed to assess the mental and emotional fitness to function
successfully as a Gwinnett County Firemedic. Each applicant will
be asked questions designed to demonstrate certain knowledge, skills, or
abilities considered basic to effectively perform as a Firemedic.
7. APPLICANT REGISTER
Applicants who successfully complete Phase I of the hiring process will then
be placed on the Applicant Register. This is the register the Fire Chief
selects from when filling recruit classes. Applicants remain eligible for
a period of one year and could be selected at any time to be given a Conditional
Job Offer. Applicants do not move on to Phase II unless selected and given
a Conditional Job Offer.
PHASE II
8. POLYGRAPH
The polygraph examination is conducted by a certified polygrapher from either
the Gwinnett County Police Department or the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department.
The polygraph evaluation measures the accuracy of information provided during
the hiring process.
9. PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION
The psychological evaluation consists of a written and an oral examination.
The applicant will take a series of written tests to measure a variety of
personality and psychological factors related to fire service work. The results
of these questionnaires will be reviewed, scored and provide the psychologist
with information for the applicants personal interview. Each applicant will
then meet with the Departments psychologist for a personal interview. This
evaluation measures the psychological suitability for a career in the Gwinnett
County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
10. DRUG SCREEN & MEDICAL
ASSESSMENT
Applicants will be required to undergo a complete physical examination and
controlled substance test. Each applicant's medical and physical condition
will be assessed to ensure they can function as a Firemedic.
11. FINAL JOB OFFER
Upon successful completion of Phase II of the hiring process, the applicant
will receive a Final Job Offer and upon acceptance, an official hire date
will be established and the applicant will become a Gwinnett County employee.
