Audits
Like most businesses, the County’s financial statements are audited annually by outside, independent auditors. State law requires that most local governments conduct an annual financial audit (O.C.G.A. 36-81-7). The audit process includes a thorough review of procedures to ensure we are following generally accepted accounting principles.
The external auditors note any discrepancies found during their audit in an independent report, and our management team has an opportunity to respond. Audit reports are intended to confirm for stakeholders that the figures presented within the County’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report are fairly represented and to help management improve by correcting any deficiencies.
As a recipient of federal funding, Gwinnett County must have a single audit performed that is designed to meet the special needs of federal grantor agencies. The standards governing Single Audit engagements require the independent auditor to report not only on the fair presentation of the financial statements but also on the audited government’s internal controls and compliance with legal requirements. Special emphasis is placed on internal controls and legal requirements involving the administration of federal awards. The single audit is performed in accordance with the Single Audit Act of 1984 (as amended) and Office of Management (OMB) Circular A-133, Audits of States, Local Governments, and Nonprofit Organizations.
