GAS AND WATER LEAK CLOSES DACULA ROAD SUNDAY AFTERNOON
(Dacula, Ga., Mar. 17, 2024) - At 1:01 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a possible gas leak near the 500 block of Dacula Road NE in Dacula. The caller stated that there was a gas leak and a water leak that was coming out of the ground.
Firefighters arrived at 1:07 p.m. and reported the presence of an active gas leak and water leak that appeared to originate from beneath Dacula Road. Fire crews immediately took protective measures by closing Dacula Road, requesting the department’s hazardous materials response team, and deploying a charged protective fire hose on the roadway. Upon the arrival of HazMat technicians, gas meters were utilized to monitor atmospheric conditions. Firefighters evacuated one local restaurant. Other restaurants were already closed for business at the time of the incident. Hebron Church was advised by responders to shelter in place during operations. Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources (DWR) responded to the scene to assist with securing the water leak. Firefighters were able to secure the water leak before the arrival of DWR. Buford Gas responded to begin repairs on the gas leak. During operations local traffic was detoured from the 500 block of Dacula Road onto Hebron Church Road to secure the hot zone.
No injuries were reported at this incident. Before repair work could begin on the gas main leak, crews had to perform excavation on Dacula Road. Crews were rotated on the scene for rehab during the repairs. Buford Gas secured the gas leak at 10:50 p.m., and the incident was turned over to DWR for water main repairs.
