****UPDATE**** Fatal Accident

Investigators with the Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit have obtained additional arrest warrants for Mr. Jacob Nicholson. 

During the course of the investigation, investigators learned that Mr. Nicholson intentionally crashed his vehicle into the vehicles that were stopped for the traffic light on South Norcross Tucker Rd. and Jimmy Carter Blvd.

Investigators are still trying to determine exactly why he intentionally ran into these vehicles that caused the death of one of the drivers.

In addition to the previous mentioned traffic charges, he’s also been charged with 1 count of Felony Murder and 10 counts of Aggravated Assault.

Mr. Nicholson is still recovering in the hospital from the injuries he sustained in the crash and will be officially served these arrest warrants when he’s released from the hospital.

 

(Thursday, January 16, 2014 @ approximately 7:32am) The Gwinnett County Police Department Accident Investigation Unit is currently investigating a fatal accident that occurred on South Norcross Tucker Rd/Singleton Rd. and Jimmy Carter Blvd. This is in an area of unincorporated Norcross within Gwinnett County.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver of a blue Honda Odyssey was traveling southbound on Singleton Rd. at a high rate of speed. As the driver of this vehicle approached the intersection of Jimmy Carter Blvd., the driver swerved into oncoming traffic, entered the intersection of Jimmy Carter Blvd. and crashed into six vehicles on the opposite side that were stopped at the traffic light on South Norcross Tucker Rd. (Singleton Rd. changes its name to South Norcross Tucker Rd. when Jimmy Carter Blvd is crossed.)

The driver of the Blue Honda Odyssey was ejected from the vehicle after impact and received life-threatening injuries from the crash. He has been identified as 22 year old, Jacob Nicholson of Gainesville, GA. and was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition where he remains in intensive care.

The driver of a tan Honda Accord was identified as 59 year old, Cynthia Thornton of Norcross. She died on scene as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of a tan Buick Lacrosse was identified as 42 year old Stephen Merritt of Tucker, GA. He received minor injuries and was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of a black Toyota Corolla was identified as 33 year old, Angelica Ramirez of Norcross, GA. No injuries reported.

The driver of a white Nissan Xterra was identified as 33 year old Claudia Vargas of Norcross, GA. No injuries reported.

The driver of a silver Lexus ES300 was identified as 58 year old, Peggy Holzgefe of Tucker, GA. No injuries reported.

The driver of a white Lincoln Navigator was identified as 51 year old Carlton Berry of Tucker, GA. No injuries reported.

Jacob Nicholson remains in critical condition in ICU at Gwinnett Medical Center. The primary investigator intends to obtain arrest warrants for Mr. Nicholson today. He is facing charges of Reckless Driving, Speeding, Driving on the wrong side of the road, No Seatbelt, Expired Driver’s License and Vehicular Homicide 1st degree.

This investigation continues as the investigators attempt to determine or identify any other contributing factors in this crash.
