On May 17, 2019 the FAA published new rules for recreational drone flyers. These new rules prohibit flying in controlled airspace without prior FAA approval. Because ALL flights near an airport require prior FAA approval, the new rules have eliminated the requirement to notify the airport or the air traffic control tower of flights within 5 miles of an airport.
For the most up-to-date information about UAS/Drone flight requirements visit the FAA’s UAS website.
If you are unsure if where you intend to fly is within controlled airspace, the FAA has an interactive map with UAS data available at: FAA UAS Data Map.
