The Special Investigations Section is comprised of six units: The units are the Alcohol and Vice Unit, Crime and Intelligence Analysis Unit, Parcel Interdiction Team, Technical/Intelligence Support Unit, Gang Task Force, and the Narcotics Unit.
The Crime and Intelligence Analysis Unit is responsible for collecting and analyzing crime and incident data to identify crime patterns and trends. The unit serves as the centralized point within the department to collect and disseminate information relating to criminal intelligence between other law enforcement jurisdictions. The unit assists detectives in gathering intelligence to identify suspects and prove their involvement in crimes.
The Parcel Interdiction Team combats the flow of illegal drugs traveling through Gwinnett County. The team’s primary function is identifying and intercepting packages illegally trafficking drugs. The unit also recovers money being sent due to elder fraud schemes. The unit has been successful in recovering and returning money to victims of scams aimed at the elderly.
The Technical/Intelligence Support Unit is responsible for collecting information about individuals or groups to anticipate, prevent, or monitor criminal activity. The investigators assigned to this unit actively assist all the units in the Special Investigations Section with their investigations as well as other local and federal agencies. One investigator is assigned to work with district attorney’s office to process and submit the required documentation for asset forfeiture proceedings in Superior Court.
