Swim Lessons

  Private and semi-private swim lessons are customized to the student’s skill level and lesson goals. These lessons are held at our year-round facilities and are scheduled individually by calling the facility.

Private lessons are taught one on one, meeting four times for 30 minutes or twice for one hour and are $160 per session.

Semi-private lessons are taught by one instructor for two students registering together and are of similar skill level; classes meet four times for 30 minutes or twice for one hour and are $240 per pair, per session.

 

Group Swim Lessons
Swim lessons are available for all ages at both year-round and seasonal facilities. Call any aquatic center to request a swim assessment to help determine which class is the best fit! Classes typically have 6 to 10 students per instructor and are held annually. To help students progress appropriately, please limit each student’s registration to one session at a time. Below are details about each swim lesson level. 

Parent Assist – Preschool 3

Parent Assist 1 | Ages 6 months – 2 years
Water orientation class for younger children. One adult per child is required to be in the water with the child. Skills include breath control, floating, kicking, and games.

Parent Assist 2
| Ages 2 – 3 years
Advanced water orientation for toddlers. One adult per child is required to be in the water with the child. Skills include water entries/exits, front kicks, blowing bubbles, breath control, underwater exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes, kicks, and coordinated arm strokes on back, introduction to life jackets, and pool rules.

Preschool 1
(No water experience) | Ages 4 – 5 years
Child will become familiar with the water without the parent. Skills include introduction to front kicks, blowing bubbles, breath control, underwater exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes, kicks and arm strokes on the back, short breaths of air, introduction to life jackets, and pool rules.

Preschool 2
(Intermediate Preschool) | Ages 4 – 5 years | Must pass Preschool 1
Skills include front/back kicks, under water exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes, arm strokes on back, rhythmic breathing, and elementary backstroke.

Preschool 3
(Advanced Preschool) | Ages 4 – 5 years | Must pass Preschool 2
Skills include treading water using arms and legs for 15 seconds, changing the direction of swimming while on front or back, and rhythmic breathing for the front crawl.

Levels 1 – 6

Level 1, 2 (Fundamental Aquatic Skills) | Ages 6 – 12 | No water skills necessary
Learn swimming basics, including entering/exiting the water, holding your breath underwater, supported and unsupported front/back float, flutter kicking, alternating arm strokes front/back, submerging in chest-deep water, coordinated arm stroke front/back, exploring deep water.

Level 3 (Stroke Development) | Must pass Level 1, 2
Skills include jumping in deep water, head-first entries, retrieving an object from the bottom, rotary breathing, front/back glide for distance, treading water for 30 seconds, changing body position in deep water, front/back crawl, and butterfly kick.

Level 4, 5 (Stroke Improvement and Stroke Refinement) | Must pass Level 3
Skills include diving from the side, long shallow dive and glide, swimming underwater, floating for time, open turns and flip turns from the wall, treading water for time, front/back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, swimming underwater, surface dives, survival swimming for time, swim all strokes for distance.

Level 6 (Basic Water Safety and Lifeguard Readiness) | Must pass Level 4, 5
Skills include swimming all strokes for distance, open/flip turns, surface dives, basic water safety, and various training techniques.

Adult Levels 1 – 3 & Stroke Clinics 1 – 2

Adult 1 (Learning the Basics Intro to Water Skills) | Ages 13+ | Little or no water experience
Skills include holding your breath underwater, bobbing in chest-deep water, supported and unsupported front/back kicks, supported and unsupported front/back kicks, floating, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, front/back crawl, and front/back glide.

Adult 2 (Improving Skills and Stroke Development) | Ages 13+ | Must pass Adult 1
Skills include treading water, front/back coordinated arm stroke, rhythmic breathing, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, endurance, and swimming in deep water.

Adult 3 (Swimming for Fitness) | Ages 13+ | Must pass Adult 2
Skills include refinement of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststrokes. Gain proficiency in open and flip turns and build endurance. Teaches skills needed to stay safe in, on, and around the water.

Stroke Clinic 1 (Swim Team Readiness) | Must pass Level 4, 5
Participants will do technique work on kicks, arm strokes, rhythmic breathing, practice flip turns, butterfly, breaststroke, and starts necessary to be a competitive swimmer. Exit skills include: Swim 300 yards continuously using the four competitive strokes in the following order: butterfly 50 yards, front crawl 100 yards, back crawl 100 yards, breaststroke 50 yards. Perform shallow dive from the block and demonstrate front a flip turn.)

Stroke Clinic 2 (Advanced Swim Team Readiness) | Must pass Stroke Clinic 1
The focus will be on technique work, endurance, turns, starts, and finishes. Exit skills include: Swim 500 yards continuously using the 4 stroke in the following order: butterfly 50 yards, front crawl 150 yards, back crawl 150 yards, breaststroke 150 yards. Demonstrate the grab and track start. Demonstrate the front and back flip turns. Demonstrates fly and breaststroke open turns.

Training & Certification Classes

American Red Cross Certification courses are taught throughout the year at our year-round facilities in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, Water Safety Instructor, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguard Instructor.

Any adult (18 and older) enrolling in an adult education course, from the list of classes above, must submit a front and back copy of one secure and verifiable document and a completed affidavit for identification to certify their legal presence in the United States as required by Official Code of Georgia § 50-36-1(1).
 


Online blended-learning courses are available. There are employment opportunities for lifeguards, swim instructors, and aquatic customer service staff; call 770.237.5652 for more information.

Aquatic Programs & Activities

  All year-round facilities offer water exercise classes with a variety of intensity levels to fit your individual needs. Enjoy water exercise from a shallow water workout to an aqua boot camp and more!

Other activities such as synchronized swimming, scuba, and diving classes are also offered. View available activities and register online.

Gwinnett Aquatic Club USMS

Fun and fitness for competitive swimmers, triathletes, and fitness swimmers, ages 16-up. Practice during structured workouts with the group on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00am to 7:00am and noon to 1:00pm at West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center and/or practice on your own with workouts emailed daily by the coach. Rates for Gwinnett residents are $50/month, $240/semi-annually, $480/annually; non-Gwinnett residents, add $20/person. There is no additional admission fee or membership required if you choose to swim on your own. Call 678.407.8801 for more information and to register
