Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program
The UGA Extension Gwinnett Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) offers various interactive nutrition education experiences for every family member!
Faced with the challenges of paying rent, utilities, daycare, and other family expenses, families experience the stress of providing a variety of nutritious foods and maintaining healthy diets on limited budgets. EFNEP offers various tools to help families cut food costs and provide healthy meals and snacks for the whole family. Participants learn new recipes and how to improve nutritional choices and habits through three different forms of interactive educational sessions: Food Talk, Hablemos de Comida, and Food Talk Teen.
FOOD TALK
A series of eight sessions provide information and resources for adults who are parents or caregivers of young children.
HABLEMOS DE COMIDA
Hablemos de Comida is the Spanish translation of our Food Talk, includes all of the same information as Food Talk and is delivered by bilingual educators.
FOOD TALK TEEN
A series that targets improving health behaviors among older adolescents (ages 15 – 18) through fun, engaging, and age-appropriate activities.
Participants enrolled in any program will learn how to:
- Plan low-cost nutritious meals
- Prepare quick and healthy meals and snacks
- Shop for the best food buys
- Keep foods safe to eat
- Eat right and light to control sugar, salt, fat, and calories
Additionally, the average weight gain for pregnant women enrolled in EFNEP, specifically for pregnant teens, is 6.5 pounds, which is within the recommended weight gain range for pregnancy.
Pregnant women enrolled in EFNEP learn how to:
- Eat healthy for moms-to-be
- Properly feed infants and preschool children
- Provide positive food experiences for children

The EFNEP is federally funded and is conducted through Cooperative Extension Service in every state and U.S. territory and is also affiliated with UGA's College of Family and Consumer Sciences here in Georgia. For over 30 years, EFNEP has been helping families with children learn how to eat healthier meals and snacks, stretch their food dollars, and reduce the risk of food-borne illness.
