Answering Your Transit Plan Questions
We’re answering your questions about Gwinnett’s Transit Plan! Find your questions below or email us at Transit@GwinnettCounty.com.
What is the Transit Plan?
Gwinnett’s Transit Plan sets the foundation for what transit could look like in Gwinnett over the next 30 years. The plan aims to enhance mobility through proposed transit services, including improving and expanding the county’s current local bus and microtransit services, an airport shuttle to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, high-capacity transit systems, and additional transit transfer facilities.
How will the Transit Plan improve our existing service?
Our current transit system, Ride Gwinnett, doesn’t go everywhere we want it to. Only 11 percent of Gwinnett residents live within walking distance of current transit stops. For the first time, this plan will provide 100 percent transit coverage through the expansion of microtransit so more people can get to the places they want to go.
How is technology included in the Transit Plan?
How is technology included in the Transit Plan?
The recommendations in the Transit Plan embrace technology that make your trip faster and more convenient. Here are some ways technology is included in the plan:
- Ride Gwinnett app: Customers can download the Ride Gwinnett app to book their microtransit and paratransit trips. On the app, customers can set their pick-up and drop-off location, select the date and time of their trip, and set the number of passengers. Customers can also see the Lawrenceville, Snellville, and paratransit zones.
- Transit signal priority: Quick Ride (BRT Lite) and Rapid Ride (BRT) have onboard technology that communicates with traffic signals so that the traffic light changes to green or stays green longer as the bus is approaching. This technology ensures faster, timelier, and more reliable trips since traffic signals can cause delays.
- Queue jumps: Quick Ride (BRT Lite) and Rapid Ride (BRT) travel in bus-only lanes that receive special traffic signals that allow the bus to travel ahead of other cars. While other cars are stopped at the red light, your bus would get a head start and jump ahead of traffic.
Is MARTA included in this Transit Plan?
No. Regional connectivity is important to everyone, which is why some of our transit modes connect to several MARTA stations in case you need to travel beyond Gwinnett. It’s also why free transfers are allowed to and from MARTA within a three-hour time window. However, MARTA remains its own transit authority and operates separately from Ride Gwinnett.
Is heavy rail included in this plan?
Is heavy rail included in this plan?
Unlike previous plans, Gwinnett’s Transit Plan does not include heavy rail. Instead, it includes multiple services that would serve and connect all of Gwinnett.
I love the freedom of my personal vehicle. Why should I be interested in this plan?
Many of us are reliant on our cars, and that’s okay! We just want you to have more options for getting to different places, even the airport. Also, any cars taken off the roads will reduce congestion for everyone. And remember, some of your neighbors — even your kids or parents — don’t have cars or are unable to drive.
I’m a car driver. Can we invest in more car lanes?

Roads can only be expanded so far before there is no available land to make them wider. This is what creates congestion in high-traffic areas.
